Childhood/ Family life
Edgar's parents where itinerant actors. His father died in 1810, and his mother died in 1811. Poe was taken in by a Richmond merchant named John Allan. Poe had a brother and a sister and his brother died young and his sister became insane.
In 1836 (age 27) Edgar married his 13-year-old cousin ,Virginia Clemm, in 1842. She died five years later. One of Poe's biographers, William Fearing Gill, saved Virginia's remains when the cemetery she was buried in was destroyed and kept her remains in a box under his bed until 1885. Edgar began to struggle with drinking and drugs after his wife past.
